At the time Andrew had just gotten back from visiting Taiwan and other parts of Asia, so it was interesting to hear his observations. Andrew and Bin shared so many great nuggets.

We talked about how they got started with a pop-up shop while working fulltime and how they continued to so even after they opened their first few stores Other topics covered include how Boba Guys weathered the pandemic, Andrew and Bin’s book called The Boba Book, and how they see boba as a way to bridge cultures.

What has Boba Guys been up to since we spoke? Lots of interesting collabs with other brands, and the release of a loyalty program called “Passport” which gamifies the experience through loot boxes instead of linearly earning points to redeem for a drink.

My guest on this episode of Talking Taiwan is the film director Arvin Chen. He just directed Love in Taipei, the film adaptation of Abigail Hing Wen’s bestselling YA novel Loveboat, Taipei.

If you’re a long-time listener of Talking Taiwan you may remember when I interviewed Abigail about her bestselling YA novel. That success was preceded by 12 years of writing and over 20 drafts of the novel. It was also in that episode that she announced that Loveboat, Taipei was going to be made into a film.

I remember watching her journey afterward on social media as the film was being shot in Taiwan during COVID. Arvin directed the film version of the book Love in Taipei and I had a chance to speak to him recently about the film.

Some of you may be familiar with some of Arvin’s other films, Au Revoir Taipei, Will You Love Me Tomorrow? and Mama Boy.

Author Ed Lin stopped by to chat with me in the Talking Taiwan podcasting booth at Passport to Taiwan. This is the first of several live interviews we recorded at our outdoor on-location podcasting booth. We touched upon a broad range of topics, many that we’ve covered here in the past on Talking Taiwan. In fact, this gives us a good excuse to share some of our past episodes in the related links section for this episode on our website. On the other hand, my conversation with Ed brought up a few good ideas for future topics and guests that we should have on Talking Taiwan.

As Ed and I were talking, you’ll hear us talking to some of the people who walked by and stopped by to say hello, among them were of some of our supporters, mutual friends and a previous Talking Taiwan guest another Lin, Peter Lin who’s band the Asian American Jazz Collective performed at Passport to Taiwan that day. That’s the thing about Passport to Taiwan, when you’re there you never know who you’ll run into. We were also thrilled to meet and talk to some of our listeners who stopped by our booth.

For those of you in New York City, you can catch Ed Lin performing in Short Stack 2 at the Ma-Yi Theatre from June 15-18. We’ll include a link to purchase tickets online on the Talking Taiwan website.

CORRECTION: The restaurant that Ed refers to in the interview as 688 is actually the 886 Restaurant. The film that Ed mentions as Taipei Au Revoir is Au Revoir Taipei.

This episode of Talking Taiwan has been sponsored by NATWA, the North America Taiwanese Women’s Association.

NATWA was founded in 1988, and its mission is:

to evoke a sense of self-esteem and enhance women’s dignity,

to oppose gender discrimination and promote gender equality,

to fully develop women’s potential and encourage their participation in public affairs,

to contribute to the advancement of human rights and democratic development in Taiwan,

to reach out and work with women’s organizations worldwide to promote peace for all.

A note from Talking Taiwan host Felicia Lin:

Tim Chng is one of the founders of ITASA (Intercollegiate Taiwanese American Students Association), and we’ve known each other since those college days. He is currently documenting the overseas Taiwan Independence Movement on Wikipedia.

I thought I’d invite him on to Talking Taiwan to talk about some of the media attention that Taiwan’s been getting lately, and the project he’s started to document the contributions of WUFI (World United Formosans for Independence) and overseas Taiwanese to the fight for Taiwan’s freedom and democracy.

After a non-Taiwanese friend of mine texted me asking about who Enes Kanter was and why he was speaking up about Taiwan, I realized that it would be a good idea to do an episode about this and other celebrities who have shed light on Taiwan- for good and bad.

Enes Kanter, a basketball player for the NBA’s Boston Celtics, has called for boycotting the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and caused quite a stir by tweeting and speaking out about Taiwan being a free and democratic country, and not a part of China. Twitter was all abuzz over this.

I had seen Tim weighing in on the Twitter discussion about Enes, so I thought it would be fun to invite him on to Talking Taiwan to share his thoughts on all of this.

I knew that we’d have an interesting conversation. We talked about Enes, John Oliver, John Cena and even Peng Shuai, the Chinese women’s tennis player whose safety and whereabouts have been in question ever since her post on a Chinese social media platform (Weibo) about being sexually assaulted by a retired Chinese Communist party leader was deleted.

Tim also talked about what motivated him to start documenting the Taiwan independence movement on Wikipedia, and how in a broader sense it is about recognizing the role of Taiwan’s diaspora in the fight for Taiwan’s freedom and democracy during the White Terror era.

If you’re interested in helping Tim with this project you can do so simply by creating a login on Wikipedia, which as Tim said is really quite easy to do, and you can start editing and adding to the Wikipedia pages about WUFI or the Taiwan independence movement.

Here’s a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode:

The background of Enes Kanter NBA’s Celtics team, has spoken up for Taiwan

How Enes Kanter and his family has been blacklisted by the Turkish government

Taiwan’s blacklist

Badiucao, the artist who created the art and designs for Enes Kanter’s sneakers that called for a boycott of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and the Stand With Taiwan sneakers

The perception that Taiwan’s democracy was a direct result of Chiang Ching-kuo lifting martial law in Taiwan

How the father (Dr. Kang-lu Wang) of one of ITASA’s founders (Alvin Wang) was assassinated by the Kuomintang (KMT)

What led Tim to start his project to document the Taiwan independence movement, especially the resistance movement amongst overseas Taiwanese

A note from Talking Taiwan host Felicia Lin:

Dr. Michi Fu is a professor, psychologist, writer, public speaker and experience creator. She spoke with me about how her mother’s decision to retire in Taiwan led her to decide to take a one-year sabbatical in Taiwan and to apply for Taiwan citizenship- which proved to be an arduous process but well worth it in the end. It has allowed her to more easily travel and straddle between living in the U.S. and Taiwan. As she’s spent more time residing in Taiwan, she’s faced challenges adulting in Taiwan due to limited language and cultural proficiency. We spoke in depth about how she’s dealt with all this by learning to let go of cultural norms and expectations, and found ways to build a community for herself in Taiwan.

While in Taiwan she’s connected with expat communities like the Black lives Matter and Burning Man Taiwan communities, participated in a bilingual version of the Vagina Monologues, and she’s also been invited to participate in the 228 Transitional Justice Project. I found that to be a timely topic of conversation indeed, with the 74th anniversary of the 228 Incident having just passed.

Also referred to as The 228 Massacre, or The 228 Uprising, 228 is February 28, 1947, the date that the arrest of a cigarette seller in Taipei sparked protests over the corruption and repression of the ruling Kuomintang party at the time. What followed were the disappearance and execution of thousands by the Kuomintang. Some say up to 20 thousand were murdered. It led to the declaration of martial law and it was the beginning of the reign of White Terror in Taiwan that lasted for decades.

CORRECTION: At the 45-minute mark of Michi’s interview when she stated that she had arrived on holiday for her dissertation, she had arrived during the Dragon Boat Holiday for her sabbatical not her dissertation.

Photo above of Dr. Michi Fu is There I heard the book’s author, Abigail Hing Wen speak frankly and openly about her 12-year writing career and journey leading up to getting her first book Loveboat, Taipei published. All too often when we hear of success stories like hers, what gets lost is what it took to get there. I was really impressed by her story of persistence and tenacity.

After getting her first book rejected, writing five novels along the way, she wrote four versions and 26 drafts of Loveboat, Taipei, before deciding to make Ever Wong the main character. In her interview with me she was just as candid- talking about all of the hard work behind honing her craft of writing and how Loveboat, Taipei, a story about the rebellion of youth in a safe environment actually brought her closer to her parents.

The latest exciting news is that ACE Entertainment (the producers of Jenny Han’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before series) has optioned the film rights to Loveboat, Taipei.

If you’d like to learn more about the Love Boat language study program, be sure to listen to our previous episode, episode 66 which is about Love Boat: Taiwan, Ep 66 Interview with Valerie Soe a documentary film made about the Love Boat program.

Here’s a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode:

How Loveboat, Taipei has benefited from the growing interest in diverse characters and storylines

The Love Boat study program experience

When Loveboat, Taipei hit the New York Times bestseller’s list

Abigail ‘s decision to step off the path to becoming a law professor and to try writing

The first book Abigail tried to get published, but was ultimately rejected

Abigail ‘s decision to enter an MFA in writing program

How Abigail persisted for over ten years after her first novel was rejected and wrote five novels before Loveboat, Taipei got published

How she wrote Loveboat, Taipei from four different perspectives before deciding to write it from the perspective of Ever Wong

The process of shopping around a book to get it published

How Loveboat, Taipei has been optioned for a film by ACE entertainment

What Abigail hopes that people will learn from the story of Loveboat, Taipei

The announcement that Loveboat, Taipei has been optioned for a movie by ACE Entertainment, the producers of Jenny Han’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before series

How important it is for writers to have critique partners

Her role as a Senior Director of Emerging Technologies and Artificial Intelligence

Abigail’s future book projects

What advice Abigail has for people who want to write a book

The feedback that Loveboat, Taipei has received

How Loveboat, Taipei has brought Abigail closer to her parents

Related Links:

Abigail’s website: https://www.abigailhingwen.com/

Abigail Hing Wen on social media:

https://www.facebook.com/abigail.hing.wen

https://www.instagram.com/abigailhingwen/

https://twitter.com/abigailhingwen

Confessions of an Undercover Novelist: https://lithub.com/confessions-of-an-undercover-novelist/

ACE Entertainment Acquires Rights To Abigail Hing Wen’s Novel ‘Loveboat, Taipei’: https://deadline.com/2020/02/ace-entertainment-abigail-hing-wen-loveboat-taipei-1202866995/

Getting Unstuck by Robert Butler: https://www.amazon.com/Getting-Unstuck-Discovering-Career-Timothy/dp/B00CAYMXU4

We are dedicating two episodes of Talking Taiwan to the topic.
